Nowadays there are a considerable number of estate agencies, some that specialise in a specific market. It is almost impossible to obtain accommodation or land without going through them.
It must be said that enquiries are varied and sometimes very whimsical, after falling in love with the area, and estate agents must work miracles to satisfy their requirements.
Who has not had a sudden urge to acquire one of the dream cabanons, those Provençal cottages built of local stone, where you can already picture yourself at home? But real ruins to do up are becoming rare.
On the other hand, the estate agents have retained the resale market and a sufficiently wide selection of property is available if you just have a little patience.
The Luberon of course offers all kinds of holiday accommodation, from cabanons, with their own little olive tree, to imposing bastide country houses, via the much sought-after charming farmhouses, typical mas, or more modern villas that are nonetheless in keeping with the local style. Many buyers are so taken with their new property that they decide to use them as their principal residence.
The distinctive architecture is recognisable anywhere.
Alongside buildings of the nobility or the bourgeois, gems of Provençal architecture and given much loving care and marvellously restored by excellent craftsmen, the rural constructions are also very interesting.
At the beginning of the 18th century an attempt was made to apply rigorous academic standards to rural houses. But rural construction refused to be shackled by theory and retained its own character, built by peasant farmers who had in mind economy and function rather than the creation of an architectural masterpiece. Peasant construction that was originally a simple act of building a shelter for family life, for animals and for the harvest, became a rich lesson in coherence that contemporary architects bring to their work.
”Is rural architecture not, by its refusal of fashion and processes, a perfectly integrated, natural presence in which everything, from the first foundation stone to the last door latch, provides evidence of man and his quality?” (J.L. Masson)
Vestiges can be seen almost everywhere in this blessed land of the Luberon: bories, the old dry-stone shelters, are dotted in the lavender fields or at the edges of a property, stone pigeonniers or dovecots, wells (there is a pretty one on the Claparèdes plateau at Bonnieux), vaulted porches, Roman arches sometimes held up by simple wooden lintels, the harmony of round-tiled roofs, the ever-present stone that is a part of every structure in the surrounding countryside …
If you still can’t find the house of your dreams, settle on a piece of land and build on it using the advice of well-informed estate agents.
The local economy also permits various forms of investment in shops, business premises, investment property and, don’t forget, farms which, despite having been split up to a certain degree, provide positive yields, especially from local produce such as cherries, lavender and vegetable produce.
Don’t hesitate to contact any estate agent during your stay in the Luberon: their advice will strengthen your conviction and help you make the right decision.
