Within the Monts de Vaucluse, between Apt en Provence and Avignon, after the last bend of a road lined with stone walls, appears Gordes.

Extraordinary vision of a village erected on the cliff. His fortress castle and church dominate the typical houses of the village welded to the rock.

Everywhere the stone alleyways slip between the high houses where you see many architectural surprises: vaults, antique doors, fountains, views of the valley and the Luberon mountain...

Gordes was built with stone from the rock on which it is fitting. Already, because of its geographical location and its history, Romans to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance to the present day, not to mention the marks left by the Inquisition, Gordes has acquired a very specific architecture.

- The Bories village

The Bories Village of Gordes with its sheepfold, wine vats, area to fly the wheat, alleys, yards and walls, reflects the painstaking work of countless generations. Nearly 3000 years of continuity, since the origin of Bories back to the Bronze Age and that recent were built in the eighteenth century. The village of Bories, scored "historical monument" in 1977, is the largest group of dry stone habitat characteristic of Apt country.

- The castle of Gordes

In a large size, this building already existed in 1031. Destroyed in the meantime, it was rebuilt in 1525. The austere architecture of the Middle Ages mingles with the new lifestyle of the Renaissance. Classified as an historic monument in 1931.
From the Renaissance time the splendid chimney of the remarkable Salle d'Honneur, classified historical monument in 1902.
Pol Mara Museum presents a comprehensive set of his work in the exceptional rooms of the castle of Gordes.
Open every day. Closed Tuesday except July and August. 10h-12h and 14h-18.

- Senanque abbey

Few kilometers from Gordes, in the deep and beautiful Senancole valley, this monument founded in 1148, is an exceptional witness of the early Cistercian architecture.
It is still inhabited by a community of Cistercian monks. While the building of the XII th century is open to visitors: abbey church, cloister, dormitory, room of the chapter, chauffoir.

Musées

- Le Moulin des Bouillons

Gallo Roman site lived since 2000 years. The mill of Bouillons is a "blood" mill. This olive oil mill, historic monument, is the oldest mill kept intact with all its elements work. Several presses have succeeded in this place since the 1st century. The last press was monumental: 7 tonnes and 10m long dated from 16th century. The mill in running with its tanks dug in the rock, its roman pipelines, recounts the history of olive oil and Marseille soap in the Mediterranean area. Collection of oil lamps, jars… Located at St Pantaleon on the road of Gordes in a 3 hectare park, which is also the Museum of glass and stained glass.

The museum is open daily from 10am to 12pm and 14h-18h. April 1 to October 31. All year for groups by appointment.

- Le Musée du Verre et du Vitrail

This great museum, of 600 m2 of exposure in a 3 hectare park where you can also see the monumental sculptures of Frederick DURAN, recounts the history of glass and stained glass from the earliest times to today. 7 000 years of history of mankind from the pearl to the window glass and from stained glass to photovoltaic cells. Since the technique of glazed to stained glass of our cathedrals and glass used for science, glass is everywhere in our lives. An exceptional collection of objects reflects the epic of glass.

The museum is open daily from 10am to 12pm and 14h-18h. April 1 to October 31. All year for groups by appointment.
